Slab Mills & Rotor Knives

Huffman machining systems are capable of slab mill and rotor knife manufacturing and resharpening. The cylindrical parts are ground into flute and outside diameter forms. The CNC grinding process produces consistently accurate geometry, improves tool performance and extends the tool life between sharpenings.

Process

  • Parts are mounted between centers or on bearing supports.
  • An integrated contact probe digitizes the axial position and the tangential flute locations.
  • One or two wheels can be used.
  • Typically a dish wheel is used for fluting and a cup wheel for the outside diameter.
  • Superabrasive or conventional wheels are possible.

Material

  • High speed steel
  • Carbide
  • Stellite inlay, or other materials

Cycle Times

  • Cycle times are considerably less than conventional methods. Actual cycle times will depend upon part geometry, material type, and amount of material removed.

Features and Benefits

  • Available on the Huffman HS-150 and HS-190 series grinding machines. For larger parts, models determined by part size.
  • Five CNC axes are used (three linear, two rotary).
  • Parts as large as 24" (610 mm) in diameter and 72" (1829 mm) in flute length (96"/2438 mm maximum overall length) are possible.
  • Rugged construction enhances system precision, durability and uptime.
  • Integrated wheel truing is available.
  • Parts are completely ground in a single chucking.
  • Helix angles from 0-30° are possible.
  • Optional Huffman GUI offers sequential programming, graphical display and on-screen prompts.
