Airfoil Belt Grinding

Airfoil Belt GrindingAirfoil belt grinding is the production grinding of airfoil blades from a premilled state. Huffman machines are capable of producing a variety of shapes and sizes, with our integrated CAD/CAM software on Huffman's five- or six-axis machining systems.

Process

  • A CAD model for each blade type is used to generate the finished airfoil shape.
  • The part is held between the rotary workhead and tailstock.
  • 1" (25,4 mm) wide belt on 1.5" (38,1 mm) diameter roller. This cleans the scallops left by the milling operations.
  • A finishing/polishing operation is performed.
  • Aerospace materials: contingent upon a number of process variables including: material type, belt condition and feed rates.

Cycle Times

Cycle times are considerably less than conventional methods. Actual cycle times will depend upon part geometry, material type, amount of material removed, belt conditions and desired surface finish.

Features and Benefits

  • Available on the Huffman HS-150, HS-190 and HS-200 series grinding machines.
  • High pressure flood coolant allows for increased feeds, reduced cycle times and less heat induced stress cracking.
  • Optional spray washdown system available for clearing the machine enclosure of grinding swarf.
  • Easy access for belt changes.
  • Fully enclosed grinding environment enhances operator safety.
