Shroud Segment Grinding
To increase operating efficiency, turbine engines are designed to run at ever higher operating temperatures. Even with advanced superalloy materials and cooling hole technology, turbine components like shroud segments must be coated with ceramic Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) to withstand the extreme temperatures.
Grinding the ceramic coating can be done very efficiently and cost effectively using superabrasive grinding technology on Huffman Grinding Systems.
The Gas Path surface can be ground with a relatively simple three axis machine and process. With a 4-axis or 5-axis Huffman grinder, multiple surfaces--including forward and aft ends, ship laps, and radial grooves--can be ground in a single grinding cycle.
Electroplated grinding wheel technology on Huffman Grinders offer significant benefits over conventional grinding methods.
